Alternative paths
| If you want... | Compare first | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Lower monthly cost | Sling, Philo, antenna plus apps | May cover fewer live channels or locals. |
| Broad cable-like replacement | Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV Stream | Can still be expensive. |
| Local channels without a full live TV bundle | Antenna | Reception must work at your address. |
| Shows and movies more than channels | On-demand apps | Not the same as live cable networks. |
When YouTube TV still makes sense
A broad live TV service can still be the simplest answer when your household watches many live channels, sports, local stations and news. The value is convenience and coverage, not always the lowest price.
Before switching away, list the channels your household would miss, then compare whether another service actually carries them in your area.
When a smaller setup can work
A smaller setup may work if your live TV needs are narrow. For example, an antenna can cover available local broadcasts, while selected apps can cover shows or movies on demand.
The important distinction is whether you need the live channel or only the content that airs on that channel.
