Live channel or just the content?
When people cut cable, they often search for the streaming service that has the exact channel they watch now. But sometimes the better question is whether they need the live channel at all.
If you mainly watch shows after they air, an on-demand streaming app may cover much of what you care about for less money. If you need live sports, local news, breaking news, new episodes as they air, or the cable-like channel-surfing experience, a live TV service may still be the better fit.
Live TV and on-demand streaming at a glance
What is a live TV streaming service?
- Designed to feel more like cable, with live channel feeds, scheduled programming and often DVR-style features.
- Examples may include services such as YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo or DirecTV Stream, depending on current availability and lineup.
- Good for live sports, live news, local channels when included, and cable-like channel browsing.
- Usually more expensive than on-demand-only apps.
What is an on-demand streaming service?
- Built around a library of shows, movies, documentaries or originals that you can watch when you want.
- May include content from cable-channel brands without including the live cable channel itself.
- Good for binge watching, shows you do not need live, and lowering monthly cost.
- May not include every current episode or title and is usually not a replacement for live sports or breaking news.
The Discovery Channel example
A user may select Discovery Channel as a must-have because they are used to seeing it in their cable guide. But what they may actually want is Discovery-style programming — documentaries, reality series, nature, food, lifestyle or unscripted shows.
In that case, an on-demand service such as Discovery+ or Max may be worth comparing because many Discovery-family shows may be available on demand. That does not mean the user gets the live Discovery Channel feed, and it does not guarantee every title is included. It simply means the content need may be different from the live-channel need.
Some HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Discovery, Magnolia, History, A&E, Hallmark, or similar channel content may be available through on-demand apps, but availability varies by service, title, plan, location and licensing.
Which path sounds more like you?
On-demand is probably enough when...
- You watch most shows later instead of live.
- You do not care about the exact channel schedule.
- You are okay waiting for episodes to appear in an app.
- You mainly watch documentaries, lifestyle shows, reality shows, food shows or home-improvement shows.
- You want to lower your monthly cost as much as possible.
Live TV is probably better when...
- You watch live sports.
- You watch live news or breaking events.
- You want local channels without relying on an antenna.
- You like flipping through channels.
- You want the closest replacement for cable.
- You need specific channels at specific times.
How CableQuit uses this choice
CableQuit can compare both types of replacements. If you say a channel must be live, the calculator should prioritize services that carry that live channel. If you are okay with on-demand content, CableQuit can also show lower-cost alternatives when a streaming app may cover similar shows or libraries.
